Overview of the Zero Waste Plan

The city of Key West adopted the state of Florida’s recycling goal of 75% by 2020, and expanded it to include an objective of “establishing a pathway to Zero Waste.”

In its Solid Waste Master Plan, the city acknowledges that expanding the current structure and funding for solid waste management is necessary in order to effectively implement the major changes that are needed to meet the goals. The plan suggests three phases with incremental diversion goals, shifting the programs gradually from voluntary (with incentives) to mandatory.
